2014 Tea Rose Stakes to Determine Campaign Path for Earthquake

June 26th, 2014

Trainer Racing Manager of Darley Australia, Jason Walsh has revealed the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 20th will be the telling sign as to whether or not exciting filly Earthquake will progress through to major Group 1 events over a mile during the 2014 spring.

A standout performer over short distance two-year-old events in the 2014 autumn, Earthquake more than stamped her claims as one to watch over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival in winning the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) finishing second in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) most notably.

Yet to contest an event over 1200 metres, Walsh said the Tea Rose Stakes figures at the perfect indicator as to whether or not the Exceed And Excel filly will handle the step up in trip.

“Obviously she was a brilliant two-year-old at the shorter trips, so we’re not quite certain whether she’ll stay a mile, but we’ll head on that path anyway,” Walsh told RVN.

“The 1400m of the Tea Rose will be the day where we decide whether she continues on to the mile or we freshen her back up for a tilt at the Coolmore.”

Aiming to emulate the feats of fellow-Darley runner Guelph through the spring of 2013, Walsh said Earthquake has taken particularly well to her time in the spelling paddock, and is expecting an even better preparation this time in.

“We were mindful of not going on with Earthquake after the Golden Slipper and she had a temperature a week before that race as well,” Walsh said.

“So she’s had a really good break, which Guelph didn’t get leading into the spring, so we’re as confident as you can be that she’ll progress as a three-year-old.”

Debuting with a comfortable victory in the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) in November, Earthquake was the standout performer over the 2014 autumn carnival, winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) prior to her Blue Diamond Stakes triumph, and comfortably claiming the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) prior to the Golden Slipper.
